These containers are being set up in the Bicske camp right now. Why so? We hope this is not a sign that Dublin deportations to Hungary are about to begin again. Together with many motivated citizens, multiple groups of Hungarian volunteers and activists are working to establish an alternative to the story the Hungarian government is telling of migration, but at the moment Hungary remains a country in which people who are granted protection systematically become homeless, and in which the asylum system has been practically abolished by declaring Serbia a safe third country.

However, when asked to detail the applicability of the concept to Dublin returnees, the Director of Refugee Affairs at the OIN stated that the designation of Serbia as a “safe third country” would currently apply to persons returning under the Dublin Regulation; who entered Hungary prior to 1 August 2015. He explained that, since the legal framework establishing the “safe third country” concept already existed in the law and the aforementioned list was aimed at facilitating the work of the OIN, the rule could be applied to old cases as well as new ones.
